I
don't have any photos, etc. Starting out as a kid with
piano & trombone lessons, my first drum corps experience was in
1952-53 in a Senior NY corps, The Teroga Blackhawks, of Johnstown, NY
(Formerly a Jr. corps The Teroga Cadets - Sponsored by a "Redmen's"
Organization. Also, we carried the local VFW Flag) This was a
part of
the old NY State "Upstate Association" At the time "The Yellowjackets"
from Gloversville , NY American Legion Post were usually the No.1 corps
in upstate NY.
I enlisted in January 54 and went to Keesler for Air Passenger & Operations School. I played Baritone bugle while there. Used to have to go across the airbase to the "old" section for rehearsals. (The cinderblock barracks & mess halls were new then.) My first time seeing the "Thunderbirds" jet team was on Armed Forces Day 1954 on the Keesler flight line. From there I went to Rhein Main AFB, playing in a volunteer band at USAFE football games, etc. Transferred to Landstuhl AFB, found out about the 12th AF Drum & Bugle Corps at Ramstein (across the road), auditioned and spent my last year in Germany playing bariton bugle and some minor "converting of band scores for drum corps use" with 12th AF Drum & Bugle Corps attached to 544th AF Band Squadron. I did several emails with Art Sessler at a time when I couldn't get into the Blue Knights guest book some time ago. ...Still have a "funny feeling" when I go to parades & contests that I miss "the old days". My "old home town" where I grew up was Gloversville, NY. I currently live in (Town of) Glenville, NY and have a Scotia, NY mailing address. Appreciate the reply! George Prentice |
